| I started Merz_city in the beginning
of 2004, at the time of the Seige of Falluja. It was a very dark
time. In America everyone was afraid to speak out. “Shock
and awe” was already a year old, with no end in sight. No
one could really see what was going on there. We were blind and
mute. This made me think about aphasic space. The natural recourse
was to Kurt Schwitters. Merz- is a principle of endless sublation:
images constantly disappear, but are secretly preserved. Merz_city,
after 9/11, lives by a rule of three: 1. just shut up. 2. Shop and
shut up. 3. Be a patriot, shop and shut up. |
