HOME > PHOTO & PHOTOMONTAGE PHOTOMONTAGE FROM: TESSERAE OF VENUS PROJECT
Attempt to Measure Sea Ice Extent 2 (Salvation Mountain) previous next
While shooting at the Salton Sea Geothermal System plants in 2007 I went to Salvation Mountain at nearby Niland, California, in the Imperial Valley. Salvation Mountain is a folk art project entirely built by hand by an elderly reclusive artist named Lawrence Knight-- from adobe and paint. Evidently the kind of energy Lawrence was producing here was like that of Love- a transformation from the idea of eros, and the notion of the goddess Venus, into a broader and at the same time more desperate moral register. Phantasms of love instantiated in arrows over adobe. I layer tesserae-forms in hot orange, which I shot from models I built on Martin Luther King’s birthday 2009, after photographing at the Salton Sea. I painted these in iridescent orange airbrush paint. The tesserae forms I elongated digitally. These I layered over and into medium format shots of the paint cans and hand lettered messages. ("God is Love").
