At La Conchita, California, a mudslide
is the site of new public memorial space as residents reclaim control
of their place and communal identity through building an elaborate
shrine. La Conchita is California dreaming. La Conchita’s memorials
compensate for the lack of rescue. Building the shrines is like stopping
time. To stop time is to enter heaven. To enter heaven may be to
forget. Shot in August 2006 in HD video. Premiere with exhibition
and travel support: Break Festival 2.4 (Potemkin Village), Ljubjana,
Slovenia, 2007.
