I've been doing remote performance
work out there working on traumatic memory in the salt/ for a long
time-- on the alkaline flats mapping 'seismic memory'. Bruce asked
me to talk with the students and show ‘failed’ or ‘flawed’ work.
The process of doing so made me realize the strengths in Soda Lake
Drawings (the video). I had made a ‘failed’ performance
along the SImmler Ranch Road alongside Soda Lake a couple of years
ago. In it I was tearing up papers (of destroyed drawings) and casting
them out onto the flat lakebed in a high winter wind. But the video
looked strange, and the performance seemed ineffectual. The performances
that I do in the remote site like this are meant to somehow heal
the place, or create a matrix or topology that sets up a healing
dynamic or residue after I am gone. To heal a trauma, not only mine,
but a larger human trauma I don’t fully apprehend.
