CHOLAME previous next
An out of body sensation over a terrain like piano keys. The pale grey cleaves come from the quicksand at Soda Lake, plus window-sill like planes or panes, an aerial photograph of the country north of Carrizo Plan, near Cholame, which s a ranching area cut through by the San Andreas Fault. Chord progressions move up and down the keyboard. Every day the child practices scales, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. Repetition dampens the torrent of panic. Scales settle thoughts into abstract elastic bands. My black and white keys are shiny and smooth. How to strike each key: first you curve your finger just slightly then strike, then as you stike you slide or slip towards the edge of the ivory. Chalome is pronounced, by some, "Shalom".
