The performance
is kind of an ellipsis between not being able to feel something
(the state of traumatized memory) and releasing it (the state of
cognition and memory). I had thought that the Simmler Ranch Road
performance was just a failure because nothing happened in the ellipse.
Coming back to that site, I wanted to try again. But suddenly, hail
came upon us and we had to head back. Bruce said, “You carry
the topology inside you-- you remember enough about the site already--
you don’t have to go back there physically to make the topology.” His
comment unlocked a point of freedom. I went back to the studio and
started making these dark drawings.
